Wit the Sun so high... blazing hot this summer (although the last few days have been cooler in NYC), we can conserve energy by drying our clothes outside! This is a great idea especially for New Yorkers that have the luxury of having a backyard :)

Setting up a clothesline is a great way to save on energy. Electric or gas clothes dryers consume energy, and the heat discharged into your home even with a properly ventilated dryer can create additional work for your air conditioning system in the summer months. Clotheslines of many kinds can be found at nearly any home improvement store. Some are set into holes in the ground outdoors, and others can be hung from inside or outside walls. You can even install one in your shower... If you have a tiny apartment as is the usual for NYC!

That is one creative way to install a clothesline in an apartment or rented property. There's no need to dig a big hole in the ground, and you may not even have the space or backyard to do so (especially my fellow New Yorkers!)

Yamerra Attends the 2011 HBA Global Beauty Expo

The Yamerra family recently attended the HBA Global Beauty Expo at Jacob Javits Center. This is a major beauty and skincare event for companies in the industry from all over the world. There were over 200 companies representing and displaying new and upcoming beauty products and trends. This is such an important event because it features a wide spectrum of new ingredients, solutions, supplier resources in order to help beauty companies discover and provide what consumers really want when it comes to skincare and beauty maintenance.

The event hosted several seminars which included, "The Future of Skincare" "What Women Want", and celebrity makeup artist Eve Pearl did a lecture on the latest makeup tips for 2012. There were also some companies that featured green alternatives to packaging such as Tarte Cosmetics which uses Bamboo instead of plastic to package products. As you know, Yamerra is definitely a fan of this effort to reduce the use of plastic!  

After listening to beauty experts and companies attempt to figure out how to please and satisfy the consumer year after year, I ask you readers two questions:  Do you think that skincare and beauty companies continue to satisfy the needs of consumers as it pertains to beauty and skincare? Do you think something is missing?

Benefits of Embracing All Natural Skincare

Over the last decade, beauty companies have heavily relied on synthetic and harmful chemicals during the manufacturing of beauty products. Capitalism and sharp competition within the beauty industry is a primary reason for such heavy reliance on chemicals. Companies are aggressive about attracting consumers to purchase their products and so may use various chemicals that are ultimately harmful but nonethless may help to solve skin ailments although they may also have long term side effects. Rather, the beauty industry has an arsenal of about five thousand different chemicals that can be used for the manufacturing of products. These chemicals are not necessarily subject to approval by the FDA. The FDA reasons that because beauty products are not cosumed eternally or swallowed and the point of absorption is the skin, the FDA is less aggressive in regulating the industry. 

However, the FDA fails to acknowledge that skin is the body's largest organ and thus is susceptible to absorb everyday toxins in the environment as well as what is placed on the skin. Accordingly, over sixty percent of the chemicals in lotions, creams, and makeup will be absorbed through the skin and eventually enter the bloodstream. These products  have the potential to build up in the organs, such as the liver, and stay in the body for years.

It has become rather difficult to avoid purchasing products with harmful chemicals because companies have become more sophisticating in disguising  the true nature of ingredients or simply fail to include an ingredient. Moreover, some companies even abuse the term "natural". Therefore, it is up to the consumer to be aggresive in seeking truly natural products and conducting independent research to insure the credibility of a company that promises all natural products.

The use of natural and even organic products like Yamerra for skin care is beneficial because it avoids the buildup of unnatural chemicals and synthetic compounds in the body.  Natural products work so that the skin only absorbs elements found naturally. The use of natural products also helps the environment. One reason it is beneficial to the environment is that the manufacture process significantly reduces the amount of toxins released into the atmosphere that typical manufacturing emits. Also, natural products have proven effectiveness because they have continually been used for centuries in many cultures across the globe. Take someone to a play or concert (I would recommend FELA on Broadway- it was amazing, but now long gone)! Make gift certificates for a special dinner, pet sitting or house cleaning. Lead in lipstick? Coal tar in shampoo? Do you know what’s in the personal care products that you use? For the first time in seventy years, lawmakers are looking to close the gaping holes in the outdated federal law that allows toxic chemicals, linked to cancer, birth defects, learning disabilities and other illnesses, in the products we use on our bodies every day. These include lotions, lipstick, deodorants, colognes, hair products, and even baby shampoos.

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky introduced legislation that would toughen safety standards for beauty products and require regular government testing for hazardous ingredients. The bill also mandates full ingredient disclosure and gives the FDA the ability to order recalls of dangerous products.

There are over 12,000 chemicals in personal care products, but the average consumer has no way of knowing which are safe. Currently, it’s only the $50 billion beauty industry that decides which ingredients are safe and can order recalls.
